Existing situation

Contrary to the statements of RTC and CST the LRH-works are not preserved for all times: neither original nor available for the public.

Actually we have the following situation:

  • The "Tech Preservation Project" of the so-called "L. Ron Hubbard Library" (actual name of this Org CST is: Church of Spiritual Technology) only ostensible serves "to preserve the LRH-Tech for all future", but rather actually its task is to alter-is during decades in small nearly unobservable (at least “acceptable”) gradients LRH-Tech toward inefficiency or even "black tech". The archiving of the LRH-originals "under protection gas in steel-vaults in A-bunkers" serves therefore not really the protection of source, but rather the opposite: It serves the prevention of the access on these originals by actual Scientologists (i.e. Int Management and Tech Elite within the Church), who wants to look and find out about source and their doubts regarding the correctness of the New Tech (per Verbal Tech Checklist).
  • the LRH-works are increasingly changed since 1977 and are newly published in revised form. At the same time revisions as such are made no longer recognizable (no italics or even revisions without change of the RA-designation). Regular forgery and extensive omission (i.e. in lecture tape recordings) were documented already on the internet.
  • this operated alter-is yet becomes supported through the systematic annihilation of still existing older editions (green and red volumes of the 70ies and such), that were stored and available accordingly LRH-Policy at least in the Qual library of every Org. In accordance with HCO PL[1], the Qual-library should hold available of at least two copies of every published edition. Instead in the 80ties Sea Org missions were sent into the Orgs to remove and to destroy "obsolete editions" in the qual libraries (VMH and other stuff). This in spite of vain protests of Qual Secs among other Staffs, who tried to rescue the concerned books also under reference on that, that these represented partially its private property. – There probably was a similar annihilation wave in the 90ern with the publication of the new red and green Volumes.
  • Further more “the time” works against us. Luckily there are still many Old-timers Scientologists out of the 50ties, 60ties and 70ties, who possess yet private libraries of genuine editions. Yet these Old-timer-generation begin to become “extinct” now and in the next decades. Their libraries will run into the possession of their heirs, who could be Non-Scientologists or "Scientologists of the new generation" (Churchies in good standing), who cannot value this collection, and perhaps even destroy it “in order to protect the world against incorrect data”. If the Old-timer on planet earth reincarnates, will wake up in a world, in which he finds no more access to his at that time gathered original writings. They are destroyed or at least scattered and at best in the private possession, to which he has no access any more. The solution exists for this Oldtimer (and also all younger Scientologists) therein to leave its library and its archive to the Library Network or to give away already beforehand or better yet to establish and to start a new library foundation in its country so that they can fall back in the next life on that.
  • And there is even another danger of loss of our loved LRH-works: slow fires[2], which are handled by Mass deacidification[3].

One may think, that this problem is already solved by digitalization projects around the world, which scanned and OCRed and proof read nearly all works of LRH and Scientology. – Yes this is a big advantage for Scientology, that KSW No 1 was realized by the arduous work of a few dedicated people. But we still need a physical library with the physical books in it for the following reasons:

  • We need originals in the library, so that we could compare the digitalized files with them to be sure, that we have source in our hands. When in doubt, compare them.
  • We need at least one or more legal organisation(s) as a crystallisation point, where all works are available for everyone, whether he may be member of the church or a free zoner or a critic or a scientist or what ever. And if one book or work would be missing in the library and can not be purchased or otherwise obtained, it would be legal to make available a digital copy of it, to have a complete library.
  • Not all interested people know where to get the digital copies of LRH-materials in the internet. And perhaps also for the insider it may not be always so. So at least an interested Scientology-student could go to the LRH library and make private copies of every needed LRH-work for himself, at least if this work is not available to him by other means (esp. if the book is not for sale). At least in some countries these private copies are totally legal under these conditions.

The remedy for this situation is described in this Admin scale.

Goals

To preserve and make available for the public the original works of L. Ron Hubbard for the future so that Scientology can learn a renaissance for the benefit of mankind.

Purposes

  • on all continents and in all important countries publicly accessible LRH-libraries & -archives are established and cooperate in a library network with each other.
  • Preservation of the works of LRH and the secondary literature through librarian measures, that – as far as it is legal for the library – also includes the digitalization of the works.
  • support of the scientific research about Scientology and the works of LRH.
  • support of the use of the Scientology-Tech and the workability of the Tech.
  • development and care of a librarian database (project eBib[4]), that supports the work of every LRH-library and its users in that all bibliographic data can be entered, updated and retrieved by all researchers.
  • additionally a website (this one) will be operated, that enables a public access over the internet to the eBib-DataBase. Everyone can publish his findings on the LRH-materials, with MediaWiki, a software on which Wikipedia is based.

Policies

  • we abide to the laws of the respective country and the respective jurisdiction especially regarding the copyrights.
  • the libraries are respectively for anybody without view of his purposes (members of the church of scientology, Freezoners, critics, scientists, SciFi-fans, press etc.) accessibly, in accordance with to be released user regulations.
  • of the main parts of the library is made available as a presence-library and magazine-library, it is however also conceivable that double pieces can be loaned.
  • copier and scanner are available to the users as usual in libraries. Also library usual copy services (with sending the copies per postal service or the Scans per eMails) can be offered for a fee based on the costs - where this is legally allowable.
  • the libraries cooperate together, exchange work copies among one another, with the purpose of being as complete as possible.
  • the single libraries are operated respectively as juristic persons (society, foundation etc, like appropriate) and so should be organized that the long-term preservation of the library – also after the death of the respective founder – is guaranteed. If book loans by private persons for the library are gotten and made available, at least a testamentary transfer in case of the death of this person towards the library must be gotten, in order to guarantee the long-term availability of the books loaned.
  • the libraries comprise the following pieces: regular work pieces (books, pamphlets, bulletins, course packs, lectures on tapes or cassettes, music, films, presentations ...), also the grey literature[5] (that means here the not for sale publications of especially the churches and organizations (magazines, Staff Hat Packs, Checksheets, video records of events...) and archive material (circular, correspondence, prices lists, promo flier, SP-declares, notices, reports, local editions, lots leaf-collections, statistics, life stories ...)
  • in substance the libraries should comprise the works of LRH (both the non-fiction (Tech and Admin), and his science fiction and other fiction), works of the churches, management-organizations and that organizations, that were established by Scientology (CCHR, Narconon, Able, WISE, Criminon, ...), works of single Scientologists to the subject (including FreeZoner) and secondary literature of scientists and critics and ex-Scientologists and Squirrels and mass media products: articles, films etc.
  • the libraries as scientific specialty libraries should similarly to the national libraries work regarding the Scientology world. I.e. it is a duty of each publisher, to make available one copy of a newly published work to the library (ideally free of cost).
  • each library should strive to establish itself financially independently, so that can be paid: the procurement of new works, rooms and the librarians. This by one-time-contributions, annual member contributions, library fees and gifts and inheritance accepted.
  • the leading librarian of every library should bring along a technical education as a scientific librarian or should graduate at least a self-study-course (prerequisite student hat). The Hatpack and Checksheet for that is generated by this foundation.
  • Single copies of rare works could additionally be administered in one of the national libraries: they are allowed - in accordance with the national law and jurisdictions - to generate digital copies and send them for scientific purposes to other national libraries and its scientific users and do this on demand. This method can be used in countries, where it is not possible to do this from the LRH library itself.
  • the LRH libraries should collaborate and cooperate with the respective national libraries of its country (Library of Congress in the USA, Die Deutsche Bibliothek in Germany etc.) and with the religion scientific special libraries. That includes also librarian consultation of these nationally libraries and specialty libraries in regard on Scientology literature (this often gets incorrectly entered in the OPACs out of bibliographic ignorance[6]) and an exchange of literature for mutual advantage (many national libraries own multiple copies of some titles and other titles are entirely missing. In accordance with its policy or guidelines, they exchange gladly with other libraries to complete their inventory). Also they often don’t know the bibliographic statements, which Scientology-works in its country were published so that they are not in the situation to put through its rights regarding the Scientology publication orgs regarding (usually cost-free) issues or copies. We could also help there.
  • the library may be accommodated thoroughly in a dwelling, an office or a house of a Scientologist or a group, that that operates perhaps as an auditor or a course room or an org. It should have however at least an own room as soon as the finances of the library enable this.

Plans

  • eBib and OPAC .
  • creation and publication of a website in order to make this foundation and the accompanying libraries well known.
  • construction of the first national library with international impact: That "L. Ron Hubbard-BIBLIOTHECA & -ARCHIVES World Wide" in the foundation friendly canton ZUG of the neutral Switzerland (no war participation, therefore ideal location for valuable cultural heritages as libraries etc.). Foundation capital of Andreas: LRH-books worth more than 100,000 CHF.
  • Foundation and establishment of further continental libraries in all five continents: America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. e.g. "The American L. Ron Hubbard-BIBLIOTHECA & -ARCHIVES"
  • Foundation and establishment of further national libraries at least in all the countries, in which Orgs of the churches exist or existed, e.g. "L. Ron Hubbard-LIBRARY & -ARCHIVE of Germany."
  • Foundation and establishment of further regional libraries at least in all cities, in which Orgs of the churches exist or existed, e.g. "L. Ron Hubbard-LIBRARY & -ARCHIVE Frankfurt"
  • Development of Hatpacks and Checksheets for the scientific librarian and archivist of the respective national LRH library.
  • Establish an address for the receipt and forwarding of book contributions to the single libraries.
  • all works can be legally digitalize by such a library so that after the copyright went finally into public domain (at least 70 years after the death of the author). And also earlier: if the ruin of the materials (paper of the books, magnetic tapes of the presentations etc.) prevents the regular use, a digital form or a Reprint can be used by the library users. Tapes for example hold only 10-20 years. Many books were printed on strongly acidic paper and are therefore hardly yet applicable after 50 years. We have to be prepared for this.
  • mirroring of all websites and Newsgroups on the subject of Scientology on computer systems of the library network so that these data remain still available, even if they are pulled out of traffic by the original publisher. This is a necessity for a scientific work.

Ideal Scenes

(has to be written down)

Statistics internationally

  • Number of Continents with a library
  • Number of Countries with at least one library
  • Number of works centrally registered in the OPAC (today more than 7000)
  • percentage of the LRH-works that are worldwide available through our libraries, vis-à-vis all existing LRH-works. The desired 100% means: that each work, that ever was published and in each edition (all languages and revisions) is at least available once in one of the involved libraries.

Statistics nationally

  • Number of works in the library.
  • Number of user in the year
  • Number of works used by users.

Valuable final products

The works by LRH and the secondary literature of Scientology and archive materials is freely accessible for every scientifically interested in every important country and that is guaranteed for the future through preserving measures.

Although acid-free paper has become more viable a large body of acidic paper still exists from the 1980s and earlier because of its cheaper and simpler production methods. At this writing it documents 7296 works (mainly by LRH) in 17326 issues and organizes by this about 173000 computer files.
  5. Non-conventional literature (NCL, also called grey literature) comprises scientific and technical reports, patent documents, conference papers, internal reports, government documents, newsletters, factsheets and theses, which are not readily available through commercial channels. NCL specifically does not include normal scientific journals, books or popular publications that are available through traditional commercial publication channels. NCL can be more difficult to search and access than traditional literature. It is typically not as well cataloged, and not collected by libraries as extensively. - From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
  6. I often saw in library catalogs works with the simple title “Scientology”. It revealed to be the book “Fundamentals of Thought”. And similar mistakes. We should help there to make the books available to the public.
